Water vs. Mineral Oil: As Coolants in Lapidary Saws

When cutting stone, the choice of coolant directly impacts blade life, cutting speed, safety, and shop cleanup. While water and mineral oil both serve to flush rock dust and cool the diamond rim, they have very different applications.

Water

You may be tempted to use water in smaller trim saws. We would suggest only using it for Porous Stones. These stones are soft or absorbent materials such as turquoise, opal, or chrysocolla which can absorb oil, permanently darkening or staining the stone.

Cons of Using Water

  • Rust & Corrosion: Water causes steel blades, arbor shafts, and cast-iron saw housings to rust rapidly if left sitting.
  • Poor Lubrication: Water cools well, but it provides minimal lubrication. On large or hard cuts, this increases friction and causes diamond rims to glaze over or wear down quickly.
  • Poor Evacuation on Deep Cuts: Lacks the viscosity needed to carry heavy rock slurry out of deep cuts.

Pro Tip for Water Saws: Always add a rust-inhibitor or lapidary coolant additive (or a splash of water-soluble oil/borax) to protect the blade. Never leave a blade sitting submerged in water when the saw is not in use.

Mineral Oil (Best for Slab Saws)

Low-viscosity mineral oil is the industry standard for large, enclosed slab saws (10 inches and larger) running automatic power feeds.

Pros of using Mineral Oil

  • Superior Blade Protection: Provides high lubricity, reducing friction between the rock and diamond rim. This drastically extends blade life on dense, hard materials like agate and jasper.
  • Corrosion Protection: Keeps internal components—including power-feed screws, vise assemblies, and arbor bearings—completely lubricated and rust-free.
  • High Flash Point: Mineral oil stays stable during long, heavy cuts without overheating or creating dangerous vapor levels (unlike hazardous substitutes like kerosene or diesel).

Cons of Using Mineral Oil

  • Mess & Mist: Generates fine oil mist and splatters, requiring an enclosed saw hood and careful shop ventilation.
  • Difficult Cleanup: Requires degreasing rocks and hands after every cut. (Not a problem, use Cat Litter to absorb the oil off the slabs and then wash with Dawn Dish Soap)
  • Sludge Buildup: Over time, fine rock dust mixes with oil to create a thick “mud” or sludge at the bottom of the tank, requiring periodic filtering or clean-outs.

How to Filter and Reclaim Mineral Oil

Mineral oil does not break down or go bad—it simply becomes contaminated with rock sludge. Reclaiming dirty oil saves money and keeps your saw running smoothly.

Gravity Settling & Decanting

  1. Drain: Drain dirty oil into a 5-gallon bucket.
  2. Settle: Let it sit undisturbed for 1 to 2 weeks. The heavy rock dust will settle to the bottom, leaving clear oil on top.
  3. Siphon: Carefully pour or siphon the clean, clear oil off the top into a clean container, leaving the dense sludge layer behind.
